MATERIALS AND EVENT REMINDER

Writer's picture: Dr P ArmishawDr P Armishaw

It’s been a great start to our materials year, with our business collection and community donation programs in full swing. ReMida prioritises its collection program on businesses with clean, unused discards and offcuts that work well in education and art contexts. Popular items from our business partners include pool covers, artificial turf, fabric, cardboard tubes, matte boards, foam, and medical containers. Other specialty or one-off business discards include shoelaces, coffee cups, fabric rolls, light shade material, and core flute.

The material donations program allows people from the community, schools, community groups and small businesses to bring a selection of items directly to ReMida. Materials that regularly come through the donations program include art and craft supplies, fabric offcuts, stationery items, materials that members return to ReMida, and Christmas/festival decorations from homes and businesses.

If you’re a current ReMida member, now is a great time to collect fabric, corks, CDs, and cardboard tubes, as we are well-stocked after recent donations. We have fabric of all different sizes and colours, from lengths great for curtains or table coverings to smaller pieces for sewing and craft projects.  Over the coming weeks, ReMida will receive a donation of 300,000 corks! 2025 is the year to explore cork-based experiments, artworks and investigations. Finally, we have the super shiny and always popular CDs. For classes embarking on light-based investigations or looking to make some standout, eye-catching outdoor displays, come in and grab a class set or two (or maybe 10) of discs.

On Saturday, February 1st, we’re hosting a back-to-school collection event featuring folders, stationary holders, paper, pens and pencils, and other valuable materials for students and teachers. We’ll also have some surprise items on sale, but you’ll need to be at ReMida on the day to find out what they are. There will also be a free jewellery-making workshop if you feel extra creative during the day.

If you’re thinking about donating materials to ReMida, especially in a post-holiday cleanse type deal, there are some materials we never take:

  • Batteries

  • Clothes

  • Used food containers, yes, even Tupperware

  • Broken toys

  • Furniture – some exceptions exist, but in principle, it’s a no.

  • Fridges, blenders, and other appliances

  •  Egg cartons

  • Toilet rolls

  • Glass

  • Printers and scanners

Updating your Christmas decorations in 2025? We’re always happy to take items like tinsel, baubles and old Christmas trees.

January is also an excellent time to ensure that your school or centre's membership is up to date and ready for the new school year.

Thanks to everyone for getting the year off to a fantastic start. We look forward to seeing everyone over the coming weeks.
